Fall 2017 & Spring 2018
Teaching Assistant with Professor Kari Marboe
Teaching collaboratively with Kari Marboe, we created curricula for intro and advanced ceramics that incorporated a dynamic and experimental approach to clay. With a focus on technique, history, and hand-building, students learned foundations and were encouraged to find their own voice as artists.
Each semester, I planned and led a multi-week interdisciplinary section of coursework centered exploring Geology + Ceramics, which included bringing in visiting artists and educators from Mills and the Oakland community. Students first learned about the science of clay with Environmental Science professor Dr. Kristina Faul, who led the class in a walk around campus to discuss rock formations and to the campus community farm to find clay in the soil. I then guided the students through the process of finding and harvesting raw clay from various sites campus, and students helped sift, filter, and refine the clay bodies. Artist Rosa Novak presented her ceramics practice and led us in clay dyeing workshop. Students created planters with the harvested clay bodies, practicing coiling and slab-building. Finally, garden designer Ethan Bodnar led students in a workshop of cutting and planting succulents to fill their new pots.
