Mauka to Makai #9 | Haleakala National Park, Maui
5" x 8"
mixed media on paper
For the month of January 2016, I lived on Oahu, Hawaii, and spent most of my time exploring the island, making art, and researched the unique relationship people have with the ancient landscape.
"Mauka to Makai" is a local expression - meaning "Mountain to Ocean" - and is generally used when giving directions, to help orient oneself on the island. This series of drawings is my own system of navigation, helping me to better understand that fascinating - and downright magical - place. Each drawing emulates the texture, color palette, movement, and general vibe of each of the specific environment in which it was created.
