Rope Team explores the way we tether ourselves both physically and emotionally to people and place. Combining my experience as a soccer player and referee with my experience learning to traverse glaciers on alpine rope teams, Rope Team explores team-building through repetition, practice, and physical connection. Just as with team sports, tying into rope systems requires a high level of trust in your teammates, as well mental stamina and focus; you function as part of a system.
During a series of three sculpture-making performances in which I timed myself for 65 minutes (two 30-minute halves and a 5-minute halftime each time), I created about 200 total climbing knots out of clay: alpine butterflies, figure eights on a bite, and prusiks.
